Marine animals and plants have long been
called for help when up to 13 million tons of plastic waste are dumped into the
ocean, damaging the coral system and threatening the habitat of
animals.
For
instance, 1.5 million animals in the ocean die from plastic waste poisoning
every year.
Small
creatures like sea turtles or large species like whales have been
direct victims of plastic waste, but if this situation continues, by 2050,
plastic waste in the ocean will be more than fish!!! In particular, Asia is
the most polluting marine environment due to plastic waste.
According
to a study published by US and Australian experts in December 2017, China
and Indonesia were the two countries that emitted the most plastic waste
into the ocean, with 8.8 million tons and 3.2 million tons respectively each
year, accounting for one third of all ocean plastic waste. Vietnam ranked
fourth on this list, each year "dumping" into the ocean 1.8
million tons of plastic waste.
Not only environmental problems or human
health, remediation of plastic waste also causes heavy economic losses
due to the cost of cleaning and disinfection. It is estimated that only 9%
of plastic waste is recycled, about 12% is burned, the remaining 79% is still
in landfills and on the environment.
